Who is responsible for maintaining PPE and using it properly?

Employees are responsible for maintaining personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensuring it is used correctly. This responsibility includes inspecting their own PPE for any damage or wear, cleaning and storing it properly when not in use, and adhering to the training provided regarding how to use it effectively in order to minimize exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other hazards.

While employers are responsible for providing PPE and ensuring that it is available, and supervisors play a crucial role in overseeing its use, the ultimate responsibility lies with the individual employees who must actively engage with and use the equipment as trained. Health and safety officers may help in developing policies and procedures regarding PPE but do not directly manage the ongoing maintenance or usage by employees on a day-to-day basis. Thus, employees must take ownership of their PPE practices to ensure their safety and compliance with health standards.
